3 Hikes at Rigi, the Queen of Mountains / Schwyz

Mount Rigi is very popular mountain in central Swizterland, very close to Luzern. It has got plenty of easy routes suitable for families with kids where you shorten your hike thanks to train going all the way up. However if you like a bit more challenge, here are few hiking tips 🙂

1. From BlÀtzen (Arth Goldau)

  • start in BlĂ€tzen, there is small parking (from Goldau through Harmettlenberg)
  • follow signs direction to DĂ€chli (you can stop for tea or coffee). Continue your way up direction to Resti, SchwĂ€ndi and Höreli.
  • Höreli Alpwirtschaft ChĂ€sernholz is great place to stop for brunch, lunch or dinner. They offer local specialties and what blown me away was their homemade yogurt with ginger!
  • after the break, head up to Rigi Kulm and enjoy fantastic view.
  • we took the trail down direction to Arth and got to the first trail crossing at Zingel. From there we continued on the trail down, which at certain point turns right back to DĂ€chli.
  • way up is also suitable for snowshoeing in winter
  • medium ‑ 7.2 km loop / 1050m elevation / 4 hrs 45 mins

2. Rigi Klösterli ‑ cliff walk (from Arth Goldau)

  • start from the side of Arth Goldau, area between Heidenegg and Ochsenchneu. There is small parking so arrive early.
  • follow the road until Frutlli (you can also take train from Goldau to Fruttli) and from there leads gravel road to Rigi Klösterli. From Klösterli we took left up direction First.
  • stop at HeinrichshĂŒtte for refreshments (they have great homemade gelato and even self service if you’re coming of the season).
  • don’t miss short but stunning cliff walk from Rigi First direction to Rigi Unterstetten.
From there we took traverse road to RömerhĂŒtte, Rotenfluo and Ochsenchneu, the starting point.
  • medium ‑ 13.6 km / 751 m elevation / 4 hrs 20 mins

3. From Seebodenalp (KĂŒssnacht)

  • start in Seebodenalp and follow yellow sign up the hill to Rigi Staffel, Rigi Kulm back to Staffel, Rigi Staffelhoehe, Chaenzeli and back to Seebodenalp
  • the best view is from Rigi Kulm and the ridge between Rigi Staffelhoehe and Chaenzeli
  • cool picnic area is half way through Seebodenalp and Rigi Staffel
  • medium ‑ 12km loop / 800 m elevation / 4 hrs (we managed in 3 hrs but we were speeding up to keep us warm 😀)

I hope you got inspired and please share with me your experience 🙂 Have a great hiking season!
